You've been working hard learning how to create a Web page. You added a really descriptive title and text telling everyone who you are and what your site is about. Now you have a great page. But wait! There's something missing. It still looks pretty bleak. Maybe you should add a background, or maybe even a border. How about some graphics?
With this in mind, you head to the Internet in search of something that will add to the really great page you created and make it speak. Where should you look, you ask? There are many places for you to search to find that perfect artwork.
The phrase used for this online artwork is clip art. There are many types of clip art and many different designs. There are buttons, backgrounds, borders, letters, photos, drawings and icons. The designs can be anything: cartoons, animals, flowers, food, holidays and anything else you can imagine.
Adding a clip art graphic to your page is simple. The first thing you will need to do is get an image onto your hosting service either from the Web or from your computer. To get one from the Web, you right click on the image of your choice. When the pop-up menu appears, click on "Save Picture As" and save it to a place on your computer where it will be easy to find later. Whether you have downloaded an image this way or created or scanned your own image getting it on your site is the same.
Upload images to your hosting service using the instructions they gave you. On your hosting services "file manager" they often have an upload feature that you can use. Just click on it and you will be taken to a page where you can search your computer for the graphic you want to use. Once you find it and add it to the upload box you just click "upload" and the graphic is instantly added to your file manager.
If your hosting service does not offer an upload feature then they probably will have you upload your files using FTP. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and does just that. Using an FTP program you will be able to transfer files back and forth from the Web to your computer and vice versa. All you need from your hosting service is their server name, your user name and your password.
