Keep In Touch With a Wiki

Get Wiki With It

By Linda Roeder, About.com

Wikipedia defines a wiki as "a web application that allows users to add content, as on an Internet forum, but also allows anyone to edit the content." At least that was the definition that was there for wiki on the day I wrote this article. A wiki, in simple terms, is a Web site that someone starts on a particular subject, this can be anything you want, and allows other people to edit the wiki at will.

For example, you open your own wiki about the TV show Survivor, because Survivor is something you like a lot and you think having a Survivor wiki would be fun, and you let all your readers post anything they want about the show on your wiki. Everything that is posted on the wiki can be deleted or edited by you or by any other reader of your wiki.

What is a Wikipedia, you ask? Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia wiki. It is like no other online encyclopedia because anyone can use this wiki and anyone can edit it because it is a wiki. Anyone, even you. If you're reading this wiki and you come across something you know is wrong, you can change the wiki right on the spot.

Similarly there is a wiki search engine too, what people won't think of. It's called Wikia and you can sign up to be a part of this wiki. Once you sign up with this wiki you can add sites to this wiki search engine all by yourself.
